WHO'S YOUR SUPERSTAR?
WhosYourSuperstar.com is the third generation of businesses to grow from the second generation of the Vnuk family business.
Ed Vnuk was the manager of a dress factory in a heavy manufacturing area, but early on he could see the writing on the wall. By 1980 more and more of the dressmaking trade was moving to Asia. Ed also saw increasing numbers of young people leaving the area. He wanted a business to provide job security for himself and perhaps a reason for his sons to stay in town. So in 1982 Ed opened his own retail sporting goods store called Sport Jes.
Sport Jes sells sports equipment as well as team uniforms, college sweatshirts and other athletic apparel. In addition, Sport Jes distinguished itself by offering quality graphics, screen printing and embroidery. Ed's three boys Ed, Mark and Brian grew up in the business.
In 1996 the boys decided to open their own operation, Fleet Decal and Graphics. But they didn't go far. They still work at their dad's place, just in a different part of the building. Fleet specializes in business to business commerce and progress was slow at first. The boys remember vinyl covers and hustling to sell magnets. But Fleet has grown, from the three Vnuk sons to more than 20 people today. The business has expanded too, and now their work covers entire fleets of semi-tractor trailers. Fleet has customers nationwide and in several foreign countries.
In 2007 Fleet invested in a state-of-the-art digital printer and the Vnuk boys realized they were at the beginning of a new era for their industry. Suddenly, they could make prints that were photo-quality and they could make them large. They could make a regular photograph the size of a wall. At the same time they noticed that the larger the print, the bigger the impression it made.
They started experimenting with pictures for family members and friends. When they ran out of faces and poses, they went to pets, gardens, motorcycles and other favorite things. The reaction was always the same. The larger the picture, the greater the response.
Whosyoursuperstar.com was the logical name for their e-commerce site. The bigger they made their prints, the more the subject became a star.
In the end, Ed Vnuk got his wish. Of course, he was absolutely right about the garment business leaving for the Pacific Rim. But Ed simply made his own job security. In the process he created a business his sons could join and gave them a reason to stay in the area. Along the way, the sons grew their own business and are making their own future. Maybe best of all, everyone lives close enough to work that they can drive home for lunch and Ed can spend plenty of time with his grandchildren.
